The Anniversary of Beth's Murder

Today, November 18th is the 22nd anniversary of Beth’s murder. I remember almost every horrifying detail from that day. There are some I have buried deep down in order to survive.

I also remember how pure and beautiful Beth was. She was kind, funny and so smart. Beth was innocently goofy, always laughing. Beth and I were best friends. I still think about her every day.

These past 11 months since the SJC ruling have been challenging to say the least. Life has been a roller coaster with more downs than ups. My family is fighting a fight we never imagined we would have to. Since December of 2013, my family has been sharing Beth’s story to everyone who will listen. From State Representatives to TV stations, radio stations and people on the streets. In April I was invited by the DA’s office to speak at the Victim’s Rights conference. Writing my speech made me finally deal with losing Beth. I have always spoken about Beth’s death like it happened to someone else’s family. In May, my brother Sean shared our story to the Judiciary Committee Board, trying to shed light on what it has been like for our family since losing Beth, explaining why reducing life sentences for juvenile murderers convicted to life is a mistake, reminding them of the innocent lives lost and who we lost.

Newly elected politicians will take office in January. We are counting on them to right this wrong. We are fighting for change. We are fighting to make a difference. We are fighting to have Beth’s voice heard. This fight is not over and we still need help.

Thank you everyone who has supported our family this far.  We can’t thank you enough. All the letters you have written, phone calls you have made, all the planning and stories you have shared. We are so grateful for you.

Dawn, None of us will ever forget that day. I learned about it from Mr. Derro at parent teacher conference. We were both so overwhelmed we just sat there the entire time and cried and tried to console each other. I knew then I had to go home and tell Danielle..one of the hardest things I have ever had to do. Then, the next day...a lot of their classmates came to my house...upset and very angry. I didn't know how to comfort them...and two years later, they only way I could console them still..was with the guarantee that this monster would spend the rest of his days on this earth behind bars. I could not even imagine what you kids and your Mom & Dad (who I grew up with) what they were going through. This may have brought closure..but so many questions still unanswered. Why...why did this beautiful little butterfly have to leave. It was not her fault. He knew better! And now, years later, he is going to have the chance to carry on with his life? Really? I just pray to God every day that these SCJ or SJC's what ever they call themselves...can remember what's in their title..JUSTICE. Justice for the victims..and their families....not the monster that caused this awful pain. To give him the right to his freedom is totally unacceptable. To say at his age he was not mature enough to understand the ramifications of his actions? That's total BS! Many cases have been proven of criminals of similar ages have been released..only to commit these rimes again. Wake up politicians..this isn't just about getting votes...it is about provide JUSTICE to all!

My thoughts are with the Brodie family today and every day. Let Beth's voice be heard. ROAR!

My thoughts and prayers are with all of you today. I can only imagine the pain and heartache of a senseless tragedy such as this. I pray that our newly elected officials will do the right thing and stop this insane plan to release juvenile offenders from prison! May God bless you and keep you in his heart.
